CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - The volunteers at Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department blindsided their Fire Chief with a big surprise -- he was nominated and won the Governor's Virginia Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year award.
Chief Billy Hanks joined the department as a volunteer in 1981 and was named Chief in 2009.
"Most of the people we take on stay with us for a long time, we have over 1,000 years of service on this fire department right now," said Hanks. "I love being able to help someone when they're in need. their worst hour is probably our best hour because we're coming to help."
