Thousands of people flooded the  streets in Downtown Roanoke on Thursday morning for the 11th annual drumstick dash.

The drumstick dash raises money for the Rescue Mission.  The shelter is asking people to move their feet to help others eat.

More than 12,000 people and their dogs ran and walked in the Rescue Mission's 11th annual Drumstick Dash.

"It's something to do with the family and help the Rescue Mission get money for their food," said a walker in the Czap family.

The 5K raises money to pay for food the shelter serves throughout the year.

"We were serve so many meals here. Not to just guests of our shelter and our program participants but people in  the community who are hungry," said Tracy Altizer, the Rescue Mission's Chief Development Director.

Tracy Altizer says last year they raised more than $250,000.  It was a record they hope to break this year.  SAYS

"We could not  feed the people that we feed  without that help," said Altizer.

The people participating in the dash have different reasons.

"Makes me feel like I can eat more turkey later," said a walker in the McClung Family.

"We're empty nesters now so we don't have any family coming over for Thanksgiving dinner so we decided to do this," said a walker in the Johnston family.

But the main reason most are running is to support the Drumstick Dash's slogan-- "Move your feet so others can eat.

People from 35 different states ran in  this year's race.  The money raised will help the shelter serve more than 300,000 meals.
