UPDATE: 911 telephone services restored in Campbell County

UPDATE: 911 service has been restored in Campbell County.

UPDATE (5:45 p.m.): Cambell County's 911 service to Altavista (369) and Brookneal (376) exchanges remain down because of a cut fiber optic line.

Officials say they still don't know when everything will be restored.

If your landline isn't working, you're encouraged to try using a cell phone. If that doesn't work you should visit the Altavista Fire Station where they say staff can help you.

We now know what's causing problems with 911 calls in Campbell County. 

A fiber optic line was damaged between the Gladys and Altavista areas.  Crews are working to fix the problem but there's no estimate on how long that could take.  

Citizens can try calling 911 from their cell phones, but since some systems are experiencing difficulties, those needing immediate help should call (434) 283-9574.

RUSTBURG – Due to damage to a fiber optic line, Campbell County’s 911 telephone service to the Brookneal (376), Rustburg (332) and Lynchburg (592) exchanges has been affected.

Telephone provider, Century Link, has located a damaged fiber between the Gladys and Altavista areas. Crews are working to remedy the situation and restore service to those affected. No service restoration estimate is available at this time.

Citizens may try calling 911 from cellular devices; however, as some systems are experiencing difficulties those needing emergency assistance should call (434) 283-9574 until further notice.

911 calls in Brookneal, Rustburg, and Lynchburg ate currently not working.  

People who need emergency assistance in those areas o Campbell County should call (434) 283-9574 until the problem is fixed.
