UPDATE: A short standoff leads to two arrests in Roanoke

UPDATE (3/14/18) - We have new information about two people who were arrested after a short standoff in Roanoke on Wednesday.    

According to the Lynchburg Police Department, officers were called to a car jacking on March 13 just after 10 p.m. in the 1900 block of Florida Avenue.  

The victim told police that they were approached by a man and a woman with a toddler at the Food Lion on Florida Avenue who asked for a ride.  After taking them to a nearby church, the man pulled a gun on the victim and demanded the keys to the car and stole a pocketbook.  

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 14, Lynchburg Police were told that the car had been found in Roanoke.  

The two suspects were arrested in Roanoke after a short standoff at the Roadway Inn on Orange Avenue.

On March 13, 2018 at 10:02 pm, Lynchburg Police officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Florida Ave for a reported armed robbery and Car Jacking.

The victim reported that they were approached by a black male and black female with a toddler at the Food Lion on Florida Ave who asked for a ride. The victim gave them a ride to a nearby church on Florida Ave. When they arrived, the male produced a handgun and demanded the keys to the vehicle and stole the victim’s pocketbook as well as the vehicle. A “BOL” for the vehicle was sent to regional law enforcement by Lynchburg Department of Emergency Services.

In the early morning hours of March 14th Lynchburg Police was notified by Roanoke City Police Department that they had located the vehicle that had been stolen earlier in Lynchburg.

Lynchburg Police Criminal Investigations and Forensics units were notified and responded to assist.

The following suspects were identified and later taken into custody by Roanoke PD. 

Alex James Joe – 18 year old resident of Lynchburg has been charged with: Robbery – 18.2-58, Carjacking - 18.2- 58.1, Use of a Firearm in the commission of a felony x 2 -  18.2- 53.1 and Credit Card theft -  18.2- 192 all in violation of the Code of Virginia. 

Juvenile Female - resident of Lynchburg has been charged with: Robbery – 18.2-58, Carjacking - 18.2-58.1, Use of a Firearm in the commission of a felony x 2 - 18.2-53.1 and Credit Card theft - 18.2-192 all in violation of the Code of Virginia.  

Lynchburg PD worked closely with Roanoke PD on this case to come to a successful conclusion.

Two people have been arrested after a short standoff in Roanoke. 

On March 14 at 1 a.m., police in Roanoke were called to Market Square about a robbery.  When they arrived, a woman told that she was robbed while walking back to a restaurant after getting cash from an ATM.  

While the woman was walking a Toyota sedan came up to her and a man got out of the car, pulled a mask over his face, pointed a gun at the woman and took the cash and her bank card from her.  

The man got back into the car, which headed east on Campbell Avenue.  The woman gave police the license plate number for the ca and they later found it in the parking lot of the Roadway Inn on Orange Avenue.  It was also determined that the car had been stolen from Lynchburg on March 13 at 9:45 p.m. 

Officers were able to find the suspects in a hotel room.  At first they were not able to get them to come out, but eventually they were arrested.  

Child protective services was also called to help with a small child that was also in the room. 

18-year-old Alex James Joe from Lynchburg has been charged along with a juvenile female who is not being namd because of her age.  

Joe is being held without bond at the Roanoke City Jail.

On March 14, 2018 at 1:00 a.m., Roanoke Police responded to Market Square regarding a robbery. Officers located an adult female who advised that she was walking back to a downtown restaurant after withdrawing cash from an ATM machine. While walking, she was approached by a Toyota sedan that was occupied by a black male who exited the passenger side of the vehicle. The male pulled a mask over his face and approached the victim, pointing a handgun at her and demanding the cash and bank card that she was carrying. The male took the items from her and got back into the passenger side of the car which drove east on Campbell Avenue. The victim gave a tag number for the car and said that a black female was driving. The vehicle was located unoccupied in the parking lot of the Rodeway Inn. It was determined that the car was stolen in a carjacking in Lynchburg, Virginia on March 13, 2018 at 9:45 p.m.

Officers were able to determine a hotel room that was rented by the suspects. Officers were unable to get the occupants of the room to come out of their room. Additional members of the Roanoke Police Department responded and were eventually able to make personal contact with the occupants. The two were taken into custody without further incident. Child Protective Services was called to the scene to assist with a small child that was in the room.

The two were transported to the Roanoke Police Department where investigators from the Roanoke Police Department and Lynchburg Police Departments continued their investigations. Evidence from both incidents were recovered from inside the vehicle located in the parking lot.

Roanoke Police have charged Alex James Joe, age 18 of Lynchburg, with Robbery and Use of Firearm for the incident occurring in downtown Roanoke. Lynchburg Detectives placed additional charges against Roe for the carjacking incident occurring in their jurisdiction. Joe is being held without bond in the Roanoke City Jail. The same charges are being placed by Roanoke Police against the juvenile female who was with Joe.

This is an ongoing investigation.
