Dog trainer recommends using a pet sitter instead of kennel

ROANOKE, Va. - The holiday season can be a stressful time for the whole family including your pets.  Dog trainer, Beverly Amsler, says this can be especially true if you put them in a kennel while you're out of town.

"You might have a elderly dog  that needs some space or special medication. You might have a dog that doesn't get along with other dogs.  And it's so stress when the owner is out of the house for a few days on business on business or even on pleasure," said  Beverly Amsler, dog trainer and owner of The Well-Trained Dog and Pet Care.

Amsler says a professional pet sitter might be a better option because the dog can stay in the home, a place that's familiar.

"The person come in..they are fed in their own bowl right there where there is no other dogs around.  They don't have to worry about another dog eating their food or playing with their toy," said Amsler.

Amsler says hiring a pet sitter is also an added security measure.  Many of them turn on the lights and bring in the mail which gives the impression that the owners are home.

Amsler suggests hiring a licensed pet sitter that's insured and bonded.
