Family Hikes Appalachian Trail with Baby

Hiking the Appalachian Trail is a huge accomplishment for anyone, but a local family went above and beyond and finished the trail with their baby.

The Appalachian Trail is 2,195 miles long and only one in four people make it the entire way.  The Quirin family did, along with their daughter Ellie who had just turned one-year-old when they began the hike.

Derrick and Bekah Quirin are experienced hikers so it was second nature for them to bring their baby along, Bekah tells us Ellie really adapted well to the trail saying, "She just thrived out there even compared to being back home, now she just entertains herself so much better even when we are in the front yard compared to in her room."

Before they began the hike the Quirin's did research to help them prepare for this journey with Ellie, they even contacted the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) but were left figuring out much of it on their own, "We also just did a lot of research, we tried to find other people who had done some extended backpacking with a baby, but what we weren't able to find was anyone who had done the full length of the trail with a baby," said Derrick Quirin.

Now that Ellie is walking on her own the Quirin's say they'll stick to shorter journeys with their toddling hiker.
