Former UVA student previously held in North Korea dies

Otto Warmbier died Monday

CINCINNATI, Oh. - Former UVA college student Otto Warmbier died today, less than a week after arriving back in the US from a North Korean prison.

He spent 17 months detained there after officials accused him of stealing a political poster from a hotel.
Warmbier was sentenced to fifteen years of hard labor.
The State Department finally secured his release after learning his health was failing .
Warmbier arrived in Cincinnati last week in a vegetative state that doctors called "unresponsive wakefulness."
The North Korean government said Warmbier fell into coma after contracting botulism in March, but American doctors found no evidence of that.
