Franklin County fair drawing in crowd of all ages

FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA - On Wednesday night, Franklin County began their annual agricultural fair at the Franklin County Recreational Park. With so many activities and displays, the fair is able to offer a fun time for the entire family, both old and young.

What is it that draws so many people to the agricultural fair here in Franklin County? Is it the food? The rides? The animals? So many families come out each year to see the various attractions Franklin County has to offer; and, David Rotenizer tells us some of the different events that make the fair so entertaining for a younger audience.

"The fair itself, I think, would be of interest to any child- actually anyone of any age. In particular, this year we have a return with the BMX, which has always been popular here at the fair as a regular staple. We have the K9's in Flight. They're returning, except this time, not just Frisbee dogs, but these are diving dogs, and I think the young folks will enjoy that. The petting zoo by popular demand is back again. And this year also we have a very unique aspect to the fair, and it's called an agri-zoo. And it's for the whole fair. You can come in and see the types of animals you would see on any type of farm."

However, the fair also has numerous contests and showcases that attract more than just children.

"We have the competitive exhibits tent. Our farm days folks are here with steam tractors so they can see, you know, early steam-powered equipment. It will be available. We have the garden tractor pull- a garden and tractor pull taking place. And who could forget? The Harvesters Performance Stage! So we have quite a line-up on our stage with live music throughout the whole fair."

Even with all the new attractions at the fair, many of the exhibits stay true to Franklin County's roots.

"This event is by, for, and about Franklin County; and this is a chance when the harvest is over; and it's a chance to kind of catch up on how your crops went for the summer, and to kind of showcase: look at my cows; look at my pumpkins; look at my corn. It's quality of life. It's a quality of life factor, and it's back to our roots. Franklin County has a very strong agricultural heritage, and this is tapping into that. If you look around Franklin County, there's a lot of agriculture to be proud of, and this kind of helps to showcase that and build upon it."

As the fair grows, Franklin County continues to cherish its rural heritage every year, while families come on out for fellowship and just a good ol' time.

The fair will open through the 16th, which is this Saturday. For more information, check out fcagfair.com and on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
