Halle's story of hope to find a cure for cancer

RADFORD, Va. - Halle Ritchie was in fifth grade when she was diagnosed with a rare cancer which could have taken her life.

Now, she's taking on the world and getting back to being a normal kid again.

"Like a few months before I was diagnosed, I was running around being a happy fifth grader and all the sudden, My world just crashed, like I was tired, I was nauseous, and then finally somebody noticed there was actually something wrong with me," said Halle Ritchie.

Halle says she knew something was wrong and one day her school nurse told her mother she should go to the doctor.

"They called mom and said that it was cancer ans so a week later they said that they were sending me to Duke," said Halle.

Halle's cancer was rare.

"Ewing sarcoma of the pancreas and Ewing sarcoma is actually a bone cancer and rarely occurs on soft tissue organs," said Halle.

In just a year and a half she had to go through twenty two rounds of chemo and was in the hospital for much of that time.

"Before I was diagnosed, they said if it was not able to be treated with chemo, they might as well just start making me comfortable," said Halle.

But the treatments worked and now Halle says she enjoys crafting and being able to hang out with her friends and family.

"I just get to be a normal kid again. It's really go to be able to do the things that I was doing before I was diagnosed," said Halle.

She says her message for other kids battling the deadly diagnosis, keep on fighting.

"Stay strong and no matter what, what challenges you face, it's going to get better because, either if you think that it's just, it's over. It's not  because your doctors and your nurses, your parents are fighting for you even if you don't feel like you are fighting," said Halle.

Halle will be a model for the American Cancer Society's Cure By Design event on September 23rd.
