Heating your home safely this winter

We are less than a month away from meteorological winter. So it's no surprise it's getting colder outside, and that means you may be reaching for the heaters, or cranking up the fireplace.

Space heaters, in particular, are a quick way to warm up your house, but here are a few things to keep in mind when using them.

You should always plug your space heater directly into a wall outlet. Using an extension chord is one of the leading causes of fires with space heaters. Especially when chords are run under rugs.

"When we walk back and forth over the extension chord, we're breaking down the wires inside the chord. Now we really have a problem," said Brian Clingenpeel.

Clingpeel is with Roanoke County Fire and says those wires can become exposed leading to a very quick way to start a fire.

He says you should never sleep or leave your house with a space heater on, and you should always make sure to follow a simple rule.

"Newspapers, magazines, carpet, drapes, other furniture needs to be kept away, at least 3 feet away from that space heater," he said.

He says you should never try to heat your house with an open flame source like a stove or a candle.

"The candle is the same thing of it can't be left unoccupied. There needs to be someone around that candle, and the safety zone shrinks down to about a foot," he said.

Lastly, the fire place. The one way to heat your house where you're supposed to use fire. Believe it or not, it's the leading cuase of house fires in Roanoke during the winter months.

"If the lining of your chimney is cracked you can easily start a fire to the rest of your house. We run lots of chimney fires from about now through February," he said.

Clingenpeel says this type of fire is also one of the easiest to prevent with simply just having a chimney sweep once a year.

He says now is a good time to check all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors before it gets too cold and we start using heaters more frequently.
