UPDATE: Hit-and-run suspect arrested in Martinsville

UPDATE:  A man has been arrested in connection to a hit-and-run in Martinsville. 

Darrick Giles has been charged with felony hit and run and reckless driving.  

A concerned citizen contacted police about a possible suspect in the crash where a pedestrian was crossing Spruce Street. 

Acting on this information, officers found the suspect vehicle and interviewed Mr. Giles who admitted to driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. 

Giles is currently in the Martinsville City Jail with a $4,500 bond.

Martinsville Police Officers arrest Darrick Keith Giles, age 45 of 804 Parkview Lane Martinsville, for Felony Hit and Run and Reckless Driving. A concerned citizen contacted police officials about a possible suspect in the vehicle crash where the pedestrian, Joseph Mooney, was crossing Spruce Street.

By acting on this information, officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle and interview Mr. Giles. During the interview, Mr. Giles admitted to driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Darrick Keith Giles is currently in the Martinsville City Jail with a $4,500.00 bond.

Police in Martinsville are investigating a hit-and-run that involved a pedestrian.  

It happened on Monday at about 9:42 am on Spruce Street near the intersection of Spruce Street Extension.  

The accident happened when the pedestrian, Joseph Mooney, was crossing Spruce Street.  He was hit by a vehicle going east on that road, and the vehicle left the scene without stopping. 

The vehicle has damage to the front passenger side bumper and to the passenger side mirror.  Witnesses and physical evidence suggest that the vehicle is a 2001 to 2003 dark grey or black Honda Civic.  

Mr. Mooney was flown to the hospital as a result of his injuries.

Martinsville, VA – On July 17, 2017 at approximately 9:42 AM officers of the Martinsville Police Department were called to Spruce Street near the intersection of Spruce Street Extension regarding a hit-and-run accident with a pedestrian. The accident occurred when the pedestrian, Joseph Mooney, 53 years of age, was crossing Spruce Street. He was struck by a vehicle traveling east on Spruce Street. The suspect vehicle left the scene without stopping.

The vehicle has damage to the front passenger side bumper and to the passenger side mirror. Witnesses and physical evidence indicate that the suspect vehicle is a 2001 to 2003 dark grey or black Honda Civic.

Due to Mr. Mooney’s injuries he was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The Martinsville Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspect vehicle and driver.
