Human remains identified as missing woman

HALIFAX COUNTY, VA - Halifax County Sheriff Fred S. Clark has confirmed to WFXR News that the human remains discovered in November were that of missing woman, Emma Compton Layne.

Layne went missing on June 20, 2017. She was last seen at her store, Cody Store, in the 10000 block of Stage Coach Road in Nathalie.

On November 22, 2017, hunters found human remains in a heavily-wooded area off Sandy Ridge Road in Nathalie.

The remains were sent to the Medical Examiner's office, and the Medical Examiner confirmed the identity to the sheriff's office on Thursday January 11, 2018.

Sheriff Clark said they are still waiting on additional information on her death, but they are treating this as a homicide investigation.

If anyone has any information please call the sheriff's office at 434-476-3339 or 911.

"I also want to thank the community for your support and efforts to help find Emma, and especially her family for their patience and persistence during this very difficult and trying process. Though we know this is the news they feared the most, may it at least bring them some closure and reassure them of my department's commitment to seeing this investigation through to the end," stated Sheriff Clark.
