I-81 Interstate Expansion

It's been an ongoing discussion whether V-DOT should expand interstate 81 between Roanoke and Salem.

Today a public hearing was held to inform citizens about the project and what can be expected, they are going to expand both the north and southbound lane by one lane each.

About 70,000 people drive the two mile stretch between exit 141 and exit 143 in Roanoke County on I-81.

C.P Lockhart has lived here his entire life and has repeatedly noticed the congestion issues in this area, "you see it all the time being backed on both lanes northbound and southbound, the lanes are always backing up," said Lockhart.

But some people still have reservations about the change, one of those people who are concerned is Judy Rogers, "It will add a significant amount of noise to the residents in the area."

She believes the change is needed but hopes they will put in a sound wall to help alleviate the noise.

Rogers urges people to vote yes for a sound wall if surveys are given out.
