Man arrested for convenience store fire

SALEM, VA - A man has been arrested in connection to a fire that happened Monday afternoon at the 7-Eleven store in Salem.

According to Salem Police, officials responded to the 1700 block of East Main Street just before 1:00 p.m. for a structure fire.

Officers said when they arrived on scene, they saw a man running out of the store. Witnesses said he had poured gasoline from a container on the floor near the counter, and then ignited the gasoline.

That man has been identified as 33-year-old Jackie Vasher of Roanoke.

Vasher is now being charged with five counts of attempted malicious injury by fire and one count of arson. He is currently being held at the Roanoke County/Salem Jail without bond.

Police said all employees were able to get out of the building without any injuries, and no customers were in the store at the time of the fire.

Authorities are still investigating the incident, including, trying to find a motive.
