Monacan Indian Nation Powwow this weekend

The Monacan Indian Nation is gearing up for its annual festival known as a Powwow.

Thursday was the first day of set up for this weekend. Several vendors were out putting up their tents and setting up their merchandise. The tribe says they are expecting thousands of people this weekend, and describe the Powwow as a big get together.

"The best way to describe it is like a big family reunion. We all get together and share dance styles, and different songs. The drum groups will share their different songs," said Carilyn Elliott, a Tribal Council Member.

The tribe says in addition to the traditional music, and dances there will also be several traditional food items there as well. Gates open at 10am on both Saturday and Sunday.
