Montgomery Co. Sheriff invests in life saving technology

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. - Just like that, any one could be killed, even a law enforcement officer.

"This day is huge. This day to us means possibly saving more of my deputies lives one day," said Sheriff Hank Partin, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Montgomery County Sheriff's office is the first law enforcement agency in the nation to try this new technology.

"There is no comparison, this is life saving technology for our law enforcement and that's why its' so imperative that we get it out there and get it in the hands in as many law enforcement agencies and hopefully military units that we can," said Sheriff Hank Partin, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

The technology is pretty simple.

This thin sheet is worn on both sides of the officers body armor.

If a bullet or knife cuts through the sheet it will send out an alert over radio and text message, showing who has been injured, where on their body they were hurt and a map of their location.

It will also pull up medical information on the victim so responders will know about blood types and allergies.

"What this changes is it puts communication out to everyone at the same time. So within seven seconds or less, everyone in the agency knows exactly where you are, they have a map.  One of the persons can actually listen in over the phone to hear what is going on at your scene without you having to do anything," said Ken Brinkley, Senior Vice President with Select Engineering Services, LLC.

To show just how fast the technology worked, the department conducted a live demo

Showing how this new technology can keep officers safe while keeping the community safer.

The Sheriff says right now his patrol deputies are armed with this equipment but he hopes by the end of the month, all 118 deputies will be protected.
