Parents upset after son disciplined for getting physical with a bully

Parents of Northside Middle School students are upset following claims of bullying and sexual harassment.

One family says their son stood up to a bully who was sexually harassing a female student by getting physical to stop him. The son faced disciplinary action with the school, and his parents are upset that the school didn't take the circumstances into consideration.

They feel the school is sweeping the issue under the rug and are upset that some students like this one keep getting away with their actions.

They also say female students have told them they've been bullied and sexually harassed before and have reported it to the school with no results.

"A lot of parents have reached out to me and said over the years, this is what happened to me when I was there. This is what happened to my child there. I had to pull my child from Roanoke County Schools, they're not allowed to go there," said Northside Middle School parent Mark Thomason. "They feel like this issue has been brought to light many times, but it's consistently swept under the rug."

A Roanoke County District official told WFXR that some of these claims regarding that specific incident are inaccurate, but they legally can't release any details. They also said they're actively investigating it.

The family of the student who got physically involved are now organizing a peaceful demonstration gathering at Northside Middle School Tuesday at noon. They say they want to stand up for their kids and bring light to this issue and hope that other parents and members of the community attend.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated that the parents are organizing a "protest" outside the school. The parents said they are not protesting the school, but peacefully organizing as parents standing up for their kids.
