Political experts weigh in on upcoming Trump presidency, women's march

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, voters have a variety of feelings and opinions about what to expect over the next four years.

As Donald Trump prepares to take the oath of office, some people are planning demonstrations for the Women's March on Washington, which will be held the day after the inauguration.

"The potential for this event is very significant," said Brandy Faulkner, who teaches a course on gender and politics at Virginia Tech.

Faulkner said she believes the women's march will send a powerful message.

"I think the more that people really started to consider the potential damage that some of Trump's policies can do to women over the next few years, people started to ask the question, 'What can I do?'" Faulkner said.

Virginia Tech public policy professor David Bieri said there is a lot of uncertainty about Trump's policies. But he said he believes there is reason to be optimistic about Trump's presidency.

"I like to refer to this as unexpected benefits of a presidency," Bieri said. "And by which I mean America is a democracy that is functioning not only through the executive, but also through the legislative and the judiciary system."

Thousands of people are expected to show up for the women's march, according to organizers. Bieri said he supports people expressing themselves in demonstrations. But, he added, he believes Trump's policies have the potential to be effective if they are implemented well.

"Take the Affordable Care Act - most people would agree that it's a great idea, but it was very poorly implemented," Bieri said. "There are lots of issues with it. And so reforming it is a good thing, but it's only as good as the implementation."

The Women's March on Washington is set for Saturday at 10 a.m.
