Roanoke region awarded more than 800,00 dollars to help the homeless

March 22, 2017 - The Roanoke region is awarded more than 800 thousand dollars to help end widespread homelessness. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development granted the funds to the Blue Ridge Continuum of Care, the region's planning body for homeless services. The money will go towards seven projects that aim to give people in crisis a permanent home.

“It means that we're able to serve folks that are really in critical need of services, housing services ,” said Matt Crookshank, the director of homeless services.   “It's really money that goes to some of the most vulnerable folks in our community.”

Homelessness in the region has gone down by 54 percent since 2012. The funding is part of a 2 billion dollar department of housing program.
