Seasonal ice skating rink coming to Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. - An ice rink is coming to downtown Roanoke for the first time this winter, city officials have announced.

"ROA's Elmwood on Ice," sponsored by the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, will open in Elmwood Park on Nov. 23, the city announced at a press conference Wednesday.

"Now with the introduction of the professional ice hockey team coming to Roanoke, there's a lot of buzz, there's a lot of talk, there's a lot of interest in having this winter sport here in the Roanoke Valley and developing it," said David Bowers, mayor of Roanoke.

The rink will be open for 12 weeks, Bowers said, until Feb. 14, 2016. Admission is $6, and skate rentals will be available for $2.

The rink will be open Monday through Thursday, 4 to 9 p.m., Friday 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 7 p.m., with extended hours while schools are on break.
