Buildings damaged, power knocked out after storms

ROANOKE, VA - UPDATE (8:45 p.m.): According to the City of Danville, more than 5,000 customers in western Pittsylvania County, including the Tunstall, Stony Mill, Whispering Pines and Cascade areas.

Those customers are served by the West Fork and Tunstall substations.

Utility crews were dispatched to the area when the outage occurred at 7:15 p.m.

Authorities are unsure when the power will come back on.

UPDATE (8:00 p.m.): AEP is reporting more than 12,500 customer outages in the region.

The most concentrated areas appear to be near Galax and Radford.

Appalachian Power is reporting several major outages in the region.

According to the AEP outage map, there are more than 3,000 customers without power in Grayson County near Independence.

There are also a lot of outages being reported near Providence, northeast of Galax.
