Strong winds cause power outages and road closures

GALAX, VA - Strong winds sweeping through Central and Southwest Virginia have caused power outages and road closures.

Chief Meteorologist John Carroll is reporting of wind gusts as strong as 47 mph in Roanoke, 36 mph in Galax, and 41 mph in Tazewell County.

As of 10:00 p.m. there are more than 7,600 customer outages, that's according to Appalachian Power.

The AEP Outage Map show the majority of outages are in the Lambsburg and Fancy Gap areas.

According to VDOT, Fancy Gap Highway in Carroll County is closed due to power lines down and trees down.

Route 620 S at Old Pipers Gap Road in Carroll County is also closed due to a tree down.
