Virginia at Work: Escaping the Dreaded Drama Triangle

Roanoke, Va. - It might surprise you just how much drama leaders must cut through on a daily basis, in order to get their teams back to work.

The Dreaded Drama Triangle, or DDT, is the topic of David Emerald's book, The Power of TED.  The research he has compiled is at the center of Lynda McNutt Foster's work with area corporate clients.  The goal of both Foster and Emerald focuses on helping leaders get out of the DDT so they can create a workplace with higher fulfillment and productivity.

Emerald says, "Research indicates leaders and managers spend as much as 40% of their time dealing with various forms of dramas."

Foster adds, "The first thing to do to get out of the Dreaded Drama Triangle is to raise your awareness that you're even in it. So is there a lot of complaining going on?  That seems to be the biggest red flags. They are coming to you with complaints instead of ideas, instead of solutions.  You're in the drama triangle."

That's where TED comes into play; making the shift from drama to empowerment.
As you can see from model - as a leader moves her staff into a healthier, empowered culture ... the persecutor turns into a challenger, a rescuer becomes a coach, and the victim becomes a creator.

Emerald says, "People find that it's more fun to go to work. That it's more fun to be creating together, and that new ideas tend to find their way onto the proverbial table. In that people are no longer defensive, trust increases and with this shared language - people can also talk about how they are relating to one another in getting the jobs done."

We spoke at length, recording podcasts broken into part one, part two and part three. In the podcasts Emerald and Foster help leaders discover the culture in which their teams work and how to avoid, or get out of the drama.

David Emerald has another book, "Three Vital Questions: Applying the Power of TED to Work and Life" to release, coming up in 2017. He discusses the book and what you can expect when it's released.
