Virginia at Work: How to stand out above the competition

Roanoke, Va. - Setting yourself apart from the competition is something we all strive to do, whether it's getting ahead in your own career, or getting your company to stand above the competition.

In Virginia at Work, we take a closer look at how you can stop blending and start getting noticed.

"First of all you need to understand your strengths, what's your genius zone," asks Lynda McNutt Foster, the CEO of Cortex Leadership Consulting.

At a TTI Success Insights conference in Arizona, with hundreds of other coaches and consultants, Foster joined forces other experts to find the best tips for business success.

Author of Stop Selling Vanilla Ice Cream, Steve Van Remortel says, "When I look at a lot of business plans, companies talk about their vision and mission but the most important question they need to answer is why do I have to do business with you versus that other company? You've got to answer, "why?"  And we like to say, to stop selling vanilla ice cream, you've got to define your mint chocolate chip. Your mint chocolate chip is why customers do business with you. It's what you strive to do better in, than anyone else in the markets you compete in."

Foster adds, "There's really a correlation between this, stop selling vanilla ice cream to your customers and from a leadership standpoint, stop selling vanilla ice cream to the people you're serving. Because they need to understand you. You need to understand them. It's a listening, hearing, feedback, constant loop that's necessary, to be able to differentiate yourself.

Make sure to tune in tomorrow morning for Good Day Virginia - when Lynda McNutt Foster joins our morning team - where she delves further into the topic to help you stand out - above the competition.
