Roanoke, Va. - Whether you're delivering boxes or ringing up gifts, those holiday temp gigs might just land you a permanent job that could lead you down a rewarding career path. In Virginia at Work, we take a look at ways to turn that short-term position into a full-time job.
According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Commerce, millions of people in the U.S. work temporary jobs. Whether you want to turn your current temp position into a full-time placement or hope for a career in an entirely different field local executive consultant, Lynda McNutt Foster, with Cortex Leadership Consulting has some advice.
"You never know when you are on a temp job who you are going to meet, what connections you’re going to make and who your boss knows. So when you’re sitting there doing that job and you’re thinking well this isn’t necessarily the job I might want to have forever, it’s a temporary job. That next boss you’re going to get might say, you know what? Cheryl was the most awesome employee for me and now you have a permanent position? You really should call her because she’s going to be great. So don’t worry about what’s happening today, know that you are making that connection and you’re making that impression that could last for many years to come," says Foster.
To make the most of a temporary job, she has this advice:
Do your best work - and act as if you're on a long interview process. Lean in. Be impressive.
Build your network - use your new co-workers to build a professional network, build relationshiops, utilize Linkedin and ask for endorsements.
Ask for feedback - from both permanent employees and your boss.
Lynda McNutt Foster will join our Good Day Virginia team tomorrow morning at 7:30.
If you want to make the most out of where you are at right now, Foster will give you the secret that helps the rich get richer and achieve continued success throughout the new year.
