Virginia Tech professor organizes "frenemies day" after election

November 9, 2016 - The election is finally over, but this political race has caused many friendships to come to a bitter end.

"Social media is definitely blowing up with people telling people to "de-friend" them or saying they'll do it themselves," said Emma Thompson, a student at Virginia Tech. Emma and her friend Hunter don't agree when it comes to politics. But today, they came together to understand each side.

"Rather than ignoring, un-friending, stuff like that we need to understand each other, talk about it and then move on together," said Hunter

It's all apart of national "frenemies day"-a day for people to reconcile with their friends who they may have lost over politics.

"We all can fall into that disliking people because they disagree with us we're all guilty of that," said Todd Schenk, a professor at Virginia Tech.  He declared the day after the election "frenemeies day" once he found out many who disagreed politically couldn't work through their differences.

"There are people who just inherently have different opinions than us, and if we want to solve those issues we want to decide how we're going to use those resources in our community, what our community is going to look like in the future, we kind of have to interact with people different than us," said Schenk.

"Un-friending" someone on Facebook is much easier than talking about the issues. But Emma and Hunter learned it's an problem that's worth the extra effort.

"In America today everybody needs to discuss these issues with people and the only way we're going to solve the issues we have in America is to talk to each other," said Bowers.

Schenk hopes people will learn to empathize with one another, even if they can't agree.

People who re- connected with someone they may have 'un-friended' are encouraged to use the hashtag "frenemiesday" to share their story.
