Roanoke College splits basketball doubleheader

The Lead: Josh Freund scored 30 points to lead Roanoke to an 83-77 ODAC win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.

How it Happened

  • With the score tied at 13 just eight minutes into the game, RC used an 8-2 run and took a 21-15 advantage on a Caleb Jordan bucket with 8:47 left on the clock.
  • VWU scored the next eight points, jumping on top 23-21 on a Lamont Steward three-pointer.
  • The lead would change hands six times in the final six minutes of the first half, with the last lead change coming when Steward hit a half-court shot as time expired to give the Marlins a 39-37 advantage at the break.
  • Roanoke came out and opened the second-half with a 17-6 run, pushing ahead 54-45 following a three-point play by Eli Sumpter with 15:15 to go in the game.
  • VWU responded with a 13-1 run over the next three minutes to go back in front 58-55 before Freund tied the game with a three-point play of his own with 11 minutes remaining
  • With the score tied at 67 with just under six minutes to go, RC scored nine of the next 12 points with a C.J. Miles layup giving the Maroons a 76-70 edge with 2:34 remaining.
  • The Marlins cut the lead to 76-74 with just under two minutes to go but Freund scored another three-point play to put RC back in front by five. The Maroons would get a defensive stop on the other end to put the game away.
  • Freund finished with 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting. He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the win. Miles had 14 points, while Jordan and Joe Mikalauskas finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
  • VWU was led by Steward who had 22 points, R.J. Nicholson had 18 points off the bench and Corey White Jr. had 10.

Up Next: Roanoke will host Guilford on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in conference play.

The Lead: Virginia Wesleyan held off Roanoke for a 53-48 ODAC Women's Basketball win on Saturday.

How it Happened

  • Roanoke came out firing taking a 10-1 lead following three free-throws by Molly Hassell, three minutes into the game.
  • VWU rallied outscoring RC 11-1 over the next four minutes to tie the game at 12-12. A Megan Wheeler basket with under a minute to go gave RC a 14-12 edge after one quarter.
  • Roanoke scored the first four points of the second quarter to take an 18-12 advantage. The Marlins would then go on a 17-3 run to close the half and take a 29-21 lead into the intermission.
  • RC chipped away and cut the VWU lead to four at 34-30 after two Hassell free-throws. The Marlins scored the next seven points, moving in front 41-30 with 2:50 to go in the third quarter.
  • The Marlins led 45-36 after three quarters and a Jaelyn Washington bucket to open the fourth quarter made it a 47-36 game.
  • RC rallied with a 10-0 run, pulling within one when a Madeline Suhr free-throw made the score 47-46 with 4:27 to play.
  • With the score 51-48 with 19 seconds left, Roanoke had a chance to tie the game but RC missed a three-point attempt and Raya Berkley sank two free-throws on the other end to seal the game.
  • Roanoke was led by Hassell with 16 points, while Suhr had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Victoria Maxwell had nine points and 10 boards.
  • Virginia Wesleyan got 12 points from Jayla Harris and 10 points off the bench from NiAsia Caldwell.

Up Next: Roanoke returns to ODAC play on Tuesday when it travels to Washington and Lee for a 7:00 p.m. game.
